Web-based is a ground-up approach that assumes the Internet is the only network paradigm in use for the system. Web-enabled usually refers to older, non-Internet systems that now include an Internet component or interface.

The term "web-based" can be shortened to "web" when it precedes a noun. For example: web-based or web application, web-based or web software.

web-based: The Translation Bureau recommends in its revised 2013 Linguistic Recommendation that "web" not be capitalized when it is part of a compound, whether the compound is written as two words or one, with or without a hyphen.
