A corollary of the contracting Earth theory which supposes that shrinking of the crust breaks it into wedge-shaped blocks, which are uplifted and laterally compressed along their margins, resulting in two-sided orogenic structures.

La théorie du coin, de Rollin T. Chamberlain, ne constitue qu'une variante de la contraction. Ne supposant plus aucune indépendance mécanique entre l'écorce et la partie interne du Globe, elle admet que, dans une contraction d'ensemble, plus marquée à l'intérieur qu'à la surface, il doit apparaître, au voisinage de la surface, des cassures obliques, déterminant une sorte de coin, qui se trouvera à la fois soulevé et comprimé horizontalement. Cette théorie ne paraît guère conciliable avec la notion de l'Isostasie.
