Integrada por Kenia, Tanzania y Uganda, cuya vigencia se inicia el 10 de diciembre de 1967; sus antecedentes se remontan a la era colonial cuando sus relaciones económicas eran estrechas : libre circulación de productos, mano de obra y capital, e idéntica unidad monetaria. Busca entre otros objetivos la dirección común de servicios ferroviarios, puertos, correos, telecomunicaciones, investigación agrícola e industrial y recaudación de impuestos. Éstos se alcanzan mediante ciertas modificaciones e innovaciones como la Ley de Derecho Comercial, definición de normas para el intercambio, armonización de políticas monetarias y de planificación y política agrícola común.

Coffea arabica o cafeto arábica es el que se cultiva desde más antiguamente y representa el 75% de la producción mundial de café. Produce un café fino y aromático, y necesita un clima más fresco. El cultivo del arábica es más delicado, menos productivo y está reservado a tierras altas de montaña, entre 900 y 2. 000 msnm. Originario de Etiopía, hoy en día se produce en países como : México, Brasil, Camerún, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haití, Jamaica, Java, Kenia, Perú, Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, El Salvador, Tanzania y Venezuela.
