DEF

An orthorhombic mineral which consists of an anhydrous calcium sulfate representing gypsum without its water of crystallization and usually occurring in white or slightly colored, granular to compact masses in sedimentary rocks or associated with gypsum and halite in evaporites.

CONT

Anhydrite is often important especially in porphyry copper deposits ... and it can form up to 15% of the altered rock.

OBS

anhydrite: So named because it is the anhydrous member of the calcium sulfate compounds, the others being bassanite and gypsum.

OBS

Chemical formula: CaSO4•2H2O or CaSO4

DEF

DEF

A chemical product which occurs naturally as gypsum and is obtained when sulfuric acid, H2SO4, is combined with calcium hydroxide, CA(OH)2, which appears in the form of a fine, odorless, tasteless, yellowish-white powder, and which is used as a dough conditioner, a gelling and a firming agent in the wine-making and brewing industries, as well as in the manufacture of cheese and preserves.

CONT

Calcium sulfate sometimes contaminates drilling fluids or may be added to provide special properties. It forms a tenacious scale in certain water-handling facilities.
