Compte tenu de l'impossibilité actuelle de mettre en évidence des symptômes vraiment spécifiques du présent dépérissement, et de la diversité des modifications métaboliques constatées chez les arbres dépérissants, il paraît illusoire de rechercher à identifier au niveau du métabolisme une cause primaire du dépérissement.
