Le chlorure du baryum [...] est un solide incolore, qui cristallise avec deux molécules d'eau. De saveur piquante, il est soluble dans l'eau. Après avoir perdu son eau de cristallisation, il fond à 960°C sans se décomposer. On l'emploie au laboratoire comme réactif de l'acide sulfurique et des sulfates. On le prépare en traitant le carbonate de baryum naturel par l'acide chlorhydrique.
