Le terme «échantillonnage» est toujours employé lorsqu'une carte sonore est utilisée. Il désigne en règle générale l'enregistrement de sons provenant d'une source quelconque. Étant donné que les sons doivent être numérisés, l'échantillonnage est un procédé d'enregistrement particulier. Par exemple, lorsque des sons sont enregistrés à l'aide d'un micro, le signal acoustique est transformé en oscillations électriques.
