La coconisation est utilisée pour la protection, pendant un stockage prolongé, du matériel civil ou militaire non en service, de marchandises en dépôt ou de machines destinées à être expédiées par mer. Elle consiste à projeter, sur une enveloppe de tissu à très larges mailles entourant l'objet, des fibres de matière thermoplastique à l'aide d'un pistolet à air comprimé. Au moyen de solvants appropriés, on obtient, par projection, des filaments continus qui se déposent sur le tissu en réalisant un véritable cocon dont l'imperméabilité est renforcée par l'application d'un vernis.
