Histoire : Explorée par Jolliet et Marquette (1673), la région fut englobée dans la Louisiane française; cédée à l'Espagne (1763), elle redevint française peu de temps avant la cession de la Louisiane qui la rendit américaine (1803). Territoire en 1812, le Missouri, esclavagiste, tarda à devenir un État, de par l'opposition des États du nord.
