Le modèle uniformitariste. - Plusieurs philosophes grecs ont soutenu la théorie selon laquelle les phénomènes naturels en cours permettaient d'expliquer les événements du passé. En 1788, J. Hutton adopta cette idée dans sa théorie de l'histoire de la terre en affirmant qu'il n'observait «pas le moindre vestige d'un commencement, pas la moindre perspective d'une fin». L'uniformitarisme, ou actualisme, est un des principes de base de la géologie moderne. Il postule que les processus qui se sont exercés dans le passé lointain s'exercent encore de nos jours.
