A high-grade paper base coated on one or both sides with a photosensitive layer or layers. The characteristics of this paper are: the type of sensitizing layer, the contrast, the thickness of the paper base, the surface of the paper, and the base color.

OBS

"Photographic paper" has been standardized by CGSB and NMA while "photographic base paper" has been standardized by ISO.

On peut distinguer les différents papiers photographiques par: le format; l'épaisseur du support: mince, carte ou cartoline; le grade: doux, normal, contraste, etc.; la surface: brillante, mate ou semi-mate, lisse ou grenue; la teinte: blanc, crème, chamois, ivoire ou autre couleur monochrome.

OBS

L'expression "papier sensible", de même que son équivalent anglais "sensitized paper" est souvent employée par les auteurs pour désigner "papier photographique". Nous ne pouvons cependant pas la déclarer synonyme, faute de pouvoir affirmer qu'elle relève exclusivement du domaine de la photographie, et que son sens n'est pas plus large.
