C'est toutefois par la station de contrôle «téléscience» qu'étaient traités la plupart des échantillons. Cela signifie que les données et les images transmises par liaison descendante renseignaient les chercheurs principaux du Centre de contrôle de mission de Houston sur le déroulement des expériences. Ces derniers transmettaient à leur tour des commandes par liaison ascendante permettant de reprogrammer les paramètres de fonctionnement du Four [four commercial à zone flottante (CFZF]) ainsi que l'ordre des expériences.
