Tenancies that arise through the operation of rent control and related legislation are known as statutory tenancies. A statutory tenant has no estate in the land but merely a personal right of occupation. (Williams & Rhodes, 5th ed., 1983, p. 1-9).

Le français «tenant», générique, qui désigne en définitive le titulaire de certains droits sur un bien, est remplacé dans certains composés par «titulaire». Un équivalent bâti avec le terme «propriétaire» a aussi été retenu pour les titulaires de droits se rattachant à l'une des formes de freehold tenancy.
