Las nuevas tecnologías han dado lugar a la creación de un vehículo guiado ópticamente (sistema CIVIS). Se trata de un autobús articulado que no necesita ser guiado por un conductor. Este sistema conjuga la flexibilidad del servicio de autobús tradicional (capacidad para evitar obstáculos, rodadura sobre neumáticos...) con la calidad del servicio del tranvía (respeto medioambiental, comodidad, seguridad, espacio reservado...). Para ello requiere de infraestructuras ligeras (se sustituyen los raíles por una marca en el suelo).
