The ecliptic is the apparent path that the Sun traces out along the sky, in relation to the stars, and aligns with the planets throughout the course of the year. La variation de la direction de l'axe du monde entraîne celle de l'équateur céleste dont le plan est perpendiculaire à cet axe et parallèle au plan de l'équateur terrestre. Le plan de l'écliptique change aussi quelque peu sa position par suite de la précession planétaire. Il s'ensuit que les points d'intersection de l'équateur céleste et de l'écliptique (équinoxes) se déplacent lentement parmi les étoiles vers l'Ouest.
