... the big bang does not fit all astronomers’ observations. The distribution of matter across space is too uniform to have come from the Big Bang as originally conceived. So in the 1970s, cosmologists postulated a sudden enlargement of the universe, called inflation, that occurred in the first minuscule fraction of a second after the Big Bang... Only inflation can amplify the primordial gravitational wave signal enough to make it detectable. If primordial gravitational waves have been seen, it means that inflation must have taken place. 3, record 1, English, - primordial%20gravitational%20wave%20signal

This chemical sensing technique relies on nanoparticles consisting of gold and silica called nanoshells, invented 10 years ago at Rice by nanophotonics pioneer Naomi Halas. Nanoshells are about 20 times smaller than a red blood cell, and they can amplify light waves and focus them so tightly that scientists can use them to detect just a few molecules of a target chemical. Building catalysts directly on the surface of the nanoparticles themselves allows researchers to use the nanosensing capabilities of nanoshells to directly follow chemical reactions on the catalyst using light. 8, record 10, English, - gold%20nanoshell

Two decades of culture-independent studies have confirmed that microbial communities represent the most complex and concentrated pool of phylogenetic diversity on the planet. There remains a need for innovative molecular tools that can further our knowledge of microbial diversity and its functional implications. We present the method and application of serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags(SARST) as a novel tool for elucidating complex microbial communities, such as those found in soils and sediments. Serial analysis of ribosomal sequence tags uses a series of enzymatic reactions to amplify and ligate ribosomal sequence tags(RSTs) from bacterial small subunit rRNA gene(SSU rDNA) V1-regions into concatemers that are cloned and sequenced. 2, record 11, English, - serial%20analysis%20of%20ribosomal%20sequence%20tags

Differential Display(DD)... and a conceptually similar technique, arbitrarily primed PCR fingerprinting of RNA(APPCR) 19, both PCR amplify subsets of an mRNA population and separate the resulting cDNAs by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Since the introduction of DD in 1992, over 100 reports regarding improvements and/or successful applications have been published. Although DD has the appearance of being technically easy, the road from "band on the gel" to a positive can be treacherous as outlined in a recent commentary. The primary criticisms are(1) a high false positive rate,(2) questioned ability of DD to identify both abundant and rare mRNAs,(3) coding regions of mRNAs are usually not cloned, and(4) verification process is time consuming and usually requires a fair amount of RNA. 5, record 12, English, - differential%20display

Fetal heart detectors are devices that use ultrasonic waves to provide audible and/or visual information. They consist of an ultrasound-frequency electrical generator and appropriate ultrasound transducers housed in a probe that is placed on the maternal abdomen. Ultrasonic heartbeat detectors amplify the audible frequency shift signal of the returned ultrasonic waves and deliver it to speakers or headphones; the heart rate is determined either by measuring the timing of the peaks in the Doppler signal or, more accurately, by using automated autocorrelation procedures. 1, record 13, English, - ultrasonic%20fetal%20heart%20detector

Short tandem repeat polymorphisms, also referred to as variable number of tandem repeats(VNTRs), are very important to scientists, because they can be used to identify individuals genetically. Marker systems are used to detect loci that respond to restriction enzyme cleavage by producing a fragment that can have many different lengths. This polymorphism is due to variation in the number of tandem repeats. VNTRs can be identified in various ways. Probes can be developed which will hybridize to complementary sequences after RFLP has been performed on a sample of genomic DNA(Southern blots). A second method involves the use of PCR. If the sequence surrounding the VNTR is known, PCR primers(oligonucleotides) can be designed to amplify the repeat region(s). The information obtained from these experiments is useful in the fields of forensics, population characterization, human gene mapping, identification of genes involved in disease, relationship testing, and identifying genes of interest such as those that encode proteins containing zinc finge. 3, record 19, English, - variable%20number%20of%20tandem%20repeats

Un VNTR est un polymorphisme de répétition ou de longueur. Il s'agit d'une séquence répétée qui constitue un allèle, dont le nombre de répétitions varie d'un individu à l'autre, et qui se transmet selon les lois de Mendel. Homopoietic progenitor cells generally become committed to a particular pathway of differentiation long before they cease proliferating and terminally differentiate. The committed progenitors go through many rounds of cell division to amplify the ultimate number of cells of the given specialized type. In this way, a single stem-cell division can lead to the production of thousands of differentiated progeny, which explains why the number of stem cells is so small a fraction of the total population of hemopoietic cells. 3, record 25, English, - committed%20progenitor

The optical amplifier... allows the power of a signal to be restored to its original strength without the usual optical-to-electronic conversion. In an optical amplifier, erbium ions are embedded in the glass of a fiber. When stimulated with a laser, the excited ions revivify an optical signal that has weakened after a journey of tens of miles. Optical amplifiers... demonstrate superior performance for very high speed networking : unlike electronic amplifiers, they can amplify a signal carrying data at transmission speeds greater than 30 gigabits per second, and they can boost the power of many wavelengths simultaneously. 3, record 26, English, - optical%20amplifier

Nodavirus RNA Replication. We have constructed DNA plasmids and vaccinia virus recombinants that express the RNA replicase of a nodavirus. In the cytoplasm of transfected or infected mammalian cells, this enzyme selectively amplifies its own mRNA by RNA replication. The replicase can also amplify other RNAs if they contain appropriate cis-acting replication signals, and we are striving to harness this ability for vector, vaccine, and gene therapy application. 1, record 35, English, - RNA%20replicase

In the normal semiconductor diode efforts are made to minimize inherent capacitance while in the varactor, this capacitance is emphasized. Since the capacitance varies with the applied voltage, it is possible to amplify, multiply, and switch with this device. 1, record 50, English, - varactor

1, record 50, French, - varactor
