Le tuilage sens travers est créé par une différence des variations dimensionnelles sens travers principalement des deux couvertures. Ces variations dimensionnelles sont dues à des modifications de l'humidité du papier. Ce phénomène, appelé hygroexpansivité, est beaucoup plus marqué dans le sens travers que dans le sens marche, ce qui explique que le tuilage sens travers est le problème le plus sérieux
