A particularly sensitive and accurate type of hygrometer has been developed in recent years by the Instrument Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau. The device, known as the infrared hygrometer, employs a beam of infrared light projected through the air to a photo-electric detector. Two separate wave lengths of light are used; one is absorbed by water vapor and the other passes through undiminished. The ratio of the infrared light transmitted by the different wave lengths is a direct indication of the amount of water vapor in the light path.

Regnault devised a hygrometer of the dew-point type consisting of two silver vessels A and G(see diagram), mounted side by side. Air may be blown from D through a tube C dipping into ether contained in A. This causes the ether to evaporate through E thus cooling the tube A until eventually, at the dew point, moisture condenses on the outside of A giving it a dull appearance compared with the surface of G. This temperature, and that at which the dullness disappears on allowing the apparatus to stand, are noted on the thermometer F, the mean giving the dew point, which in conjunction with the room temperature, enables the relative humidity of the air to be calculated.

Il se compose d'une boîte en métal dont une face latérale est nickelée, chromée ou dorée extérieurement et encadrée à petite distance d'une plaque de même nature. On envoie un courant d'air dans la boîte, pour provoquer la vaporisation de l'éther que contient celle-ci. La température s'abaisse. Lorsqu'elle devient égale à la température pour laquelle la pression de la vapeur d'eau atmosphérique est maximale, de la vapeur se condense sur la paroi de la boîte, paroi qui devient mate alors que la plaque qui l'encadre reste brillante.

Hygrometers in the home are ordinarily of the hair type. Some "hygrometers" are actually stationary psychrometers, with the wet-bulb covered by a wick which carries a constant flow of water from a small dish or tube. A novel humidity "instrument" is the weather house. When the old woman comes out it is supposed to rain; when the young girl appears fair weather is due. One or two strands of eat-gut, their tendency to twist varying with relative humidity, activate this device.
