The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of the First World War, "the War to end all Wars," on Monday, November 11, 1918 at 11:00 AM (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month).

In the United States, Remembrance Day is known as Veterans Day. The dead of World War II and Korea, and of all other wars are also remembered on this day.

The federal department of Veterans Affairs Canada states that the date is of "remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace;" specifically, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Forces have participated.

Le jour du Souvenir aussi connu comme jour de l'Armistice, est une journée de commémoration annuelle observée en Europe et dans les pays du Commonwealth pour commémorer les sacrifices de la Première Guerre mondiale ainsi que d'autres guerres. Cette journée a lieu le 11 novembre pour rappeler la signature de l'Armistice mettant fin à la Première Guerre mondiale, en 1918.
