Le bossage est né de la nécessité d'élever rapidement des constructions en pierre sans perdre le temps de les parementer. On ne taillait que les lits et les joints des pierres. Les Romains ont usé de ce moyen rapide de construction, et au Moyen Age, il fut particulièrement utilisé dans la construction des fortifications, comme à Carcassonne [...]. Après une disparition de deux siècles environ, ce mode de parement réapparaît au XVIe siècle [...] et devient un moyen de décoration.
