Deterioration during burial. In certain burial conditions, there may be exceptional preservation of objects. Organic materials (e.g. wood, skin and leather, feathers, bone, ivory, textile, horn, antler, baleen) are best preserved in very wet, very dry, frozen or low-oxygen burial environments. In these conditions, the materials are protected from biological activity (e.g. bacteria, mould, insects, animals).

Site capping or burial involves judiciously covering an archaeological site or elements of an archaeological site with fill, asphalt, peat, concrete, etc. for conservation purposes.

Burial, also called interment and (when applied to human burial) inhumation, is the act of placing a person or object into the ground. Usually, this is accomplished by digging a pit or trench, placing the person or object in it, and refilling it with the soil that was dug out of it.

La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que, para referirse al hecho de enterrar un cadáver y a los servicios relacionados con el enterramiento, en español se emplea preferentemente el término "entierro". Debe evitarse el uso de "funeral", que es un calco del inglés y que en español significa "conjunto de los oficios solemnes que se celebran por un difunto algunos días después del entierro o en cada aniversario de su muerte".

En règle générale, on peut supposer qu'en appliquant diverses techniques d'auto-sauvetage, comme par exemple se libérer des skis et des bâtons dès que l'on est pris, se mettre à nager pendant que l'avalanche est en mouvement, on peut éviter l'ensevelissement complet. Il est également conseillé d'essayer, juste avant l'arrêt de l'avalanche, de garder les mains devant le visage afin de créer une poche d'air permettant de respirer. Grâce à ces mesures de précaution, les chances de survie en cas d'avalanche devraient croître d'une manière significative. Cependant, on ignore jusqu'à quel point un enseveli est effectivement en mesure de faire ces gestes salvateurs.

A number of disposal methods for nuclear fuel wastes have been suggested internationally, including ejection of the waste into outer space; transmutation of the radioactive elements; emplacement in a polar ice cap; and burial within various geological formations, both on the continents and beneath the sea floor.

Of the various disposal concepts which have been suggested for LLW, only three were compatible with the geological characteristics of the CRNL property: burial in excavated sand trenches with minor engineered features to inhibit nuclide migration, containment in an engineered below-ground vault; and emplacement in a shallow mined cavity rock.
