DEF

A tan-coloured unglazed stoneware developed by Wedgwood, c. 1770, by refining the clay used by peasant potters to make buff-brown wares. Originally it was used for coarse game- and pie-dishes as a form of ovenware, but later it was decorated with enamel and encaustic painting, and with sprigged decoration in the same way as jasper ware. Pieces of useful ware were usually glazed on the interior.
