De origen indio, el chutney es mucho más que una preparación muy condimentada, (su significado literal de chatni) se trata de frutas, verduras, hierbas y especies que se cocinan lentamente en vinagre y azúcar para producir un condimento agridulce. Las especies más usadas son aromáticas: canela, jengibre, enebro y cardamomo.
