On gravait parfois sur les cippes les décrets du Sénat; on en plaçait dans les champs pour marquer les limites des propriétés; on les plantait sur le bord des routes pour servir de bornes milliaires et indiquer les distances, etc., mais on les employait surtout comme monuments sépulcraux.
