An option whose price changes by $1 for every $2 change in the price of the underlying has a delta of 0.5. At-the-money options have deltas near 0.5. The delta rises toward 1.0 for options that are deep-in-the-money, and approaches 0 for deep-out-of-the-money options.

Mesure du risque rattaché à une option, établie sous la forme d'un coefficient exprimant le rapport entre la variation de la prime de l'option et la variation du cours du sous-jacent, et traduisant la probabilité que l'option a d'être dans le cours à l'échéance, et donc d'être exercée.

Pour une option au cours, le delta est proche de 0,5, l'option ayant autant de chances d'être exercée que de ne pas l'être; la prime varie de 0,50 $ pour chaque dollar de variation du cours du sous-jacent. Pour une option profondément dans le cours, le delta est proche de 1, la probabilité d'exercice de l'option étant très élevée; toute variation du cours du sous-jacent se répercute immédiatement sur le moment de la prime. Pour une option profondément hors du cours, le delta est proche de 0, l'option ayant très peu de chances d'être exercée; une variation du cours du sous-jacent n'a que peu d'effet sur le montant de la prime. Le delta est toujours compris entre 0 et 1 et est positif ou négatif selon qu'il s'agit d'une option d'achat ou d'une option de vente.
