L'électrofloculation est utilisée pour piéger des espèces polluantes comme l'étain, le plomb, le zinc, le chrome, le phosphore, le cyanure, etc. La concentration en métaux lourds est ainsi couramment réduite de plusieurs centaines de milligrammes par litre à moins de 1 milligramme par litre. Les boues produites sont beaucoup moins volumineuses et décantent beaucoup plus vite que dans le cas d'une floculation classique par ajout direct d'hydroxydes. Elles sont conformes aux critères d'acceptation pour la mise en décharge.
