The fenestron, [like] a conventional tail rotor, [features] spinning blades that generate a thrust force to cancel out the tendency of a helicopter fuselage to rotate. However, the fenestron rotor differs from a conventional rotor by adding several more blades. ... Compared to conventional tail rotor blades, the fenestron blades are also much smaller and spin at higher speeds. Furthermore, these blades are mounted within a shroud that forms part of the vertical tail fin of the helicopter. This configuration turns the rotor into a ducted fan whose blade tips are protected from the external air.

Un fenestron est une cavité carénée hébergeant le rotor anticouple de queue d'un hélicoptère. Les rotors de queue conventionnels ont de 2 à 4 pales. Les rotors de queue dans des fenestrons ont de 8 à 18 pales de taille plus réduite. Elles ont des angles d'incidence différents qui font que le bruit est réparti sur différentes fréquences et de ce fait est moins intense. Le fenestron permet une vitesse de rotation supérieure.

Comme sur tous les hélicoptères qui en sont équipés, le fenestron est avant tout un équipement qui participe à l'amélioration de la sécurité de l’appareil et de ses opérateurs. En carénant le rotor anticouple, on le protège des risques de collision au sol tout en évitant les accidents qui peuvent concerner les personnels au sol. [...] Même en cas de destruction ou de panne du rotor anticouple lui-même pendant le vol, les propriétés aérodynamiques du carénage du fenestron apporteraient une sécurité additionnelle.

A historic mechanical device for yaw control of a wind rotor, e.g. in historic wind mills and in some early (to about 1980) electricity generating wind turbines.

On each side of the nacelle are placed two multibladed rotors with opposite rotational direction. Their equilibrium position is when their rotation planes are in the wind direction. If not, they rotate to come back to this equilibrium position, thus driving the rotor perpendicular to the wind by gearing that turns the nacelle.

Some sources also describe the "fan tail" as a secondary rotor used to orient the main rotor in the wind.
