Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
CONT

Optimal application of protein engineering technology will require understanding how the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide chain specifies its spatial conformation. It is now clear that polypeptide chain folding and subunit assembly proceeds through sequential pathways involving defined intermediates. The critical amino acid instructions directing these pathways appear to be dispersed through the sequence... Very similar patterns of chain folding and domain structure can arise from different amino acid sequences that show little or no homology. The immunoglobulins are a prime example of conservation of structure despite extensive differences in amino acid sequence.

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Forwarding, Folding, and Binding (Printing)
DEF

The operation by which flat printed sheets are folded to book size.

OBS

The number of pages in the folded sheet is always a multiple of four (i.e. two leaves). Folded sheets are usually of 8,16 or 32 pages. The flat printed sheet may contain as many as 128 pages but folding machines convert such sheets into either eight individual 16-page folded sections or four sections each of 32 pages.

Manière de plier une feuille d'impression pour la ramener par des réductions successives au format de l'ouvrage; la feuille est pliée en autant de parties égales qu'il y a de pages par côté.

OBS

La désignation du format d'un livre correspond au mode de pliage.

CONT

Trajectories diverge within a plane by spiralling out. They then emerge from the plane, and return again, reinjected into the center of the spiral. The process is repeated ad infinitum. This requires two operations: stretching due to SIC, followed by folding, without which the trajectories could not remain confined in a bounded space.

CONT

Strictly speaking, folding means the enclosure of sheep in pens or 'folds'. In the past, these were often hurdles made of wood or wattle and one of the reasons for the decline in the practice of arable folding was the labour involved in moving folds. The object of such close confinement of sheep was and is to achieve a high degree of managemental control. This may be used for various purposes, such as uniform manuring and treading of land, rationing of the food supply or a high degree of utilization.
