Layering. In general, snow is deposited in layers due to variations in wind speed, direction, temperature and precipitation type or intensity during storms. These structural differences in the snowpack result in mechanical differences in strength within and between layers, and a primary causal factors in direct-action avalanches.

A bulk of oilseeds has certain physical, chemical and biological properties, the effects of which are frequently interrelated. Physical properties of bulks include porosity, flow, layering and sorption. The degree of porosity, for example, depends on the size and shape of the seeds, dockage level, storage period, and the distribution of moisture in the bulk. These physical characteristics in turn influence the movement of air, heat and moisture.
