Étant donné que les sons doivent être numérisés, l'échantillonnage est un procédé d'enregistrement particulier. Par exemple, lorsque des sons sont enregistrés à l'aide d'un micro, le signal acoustique est transformé en oscillations électriques. Pour enregistrer sous une forme numérique des vibrations analogiques, celles-ci doivent être échantillonnées. La valeur mesurée lors de la réception est enregistrée, puis c'est au tour de la valeur suivante, et ainsi de suite.
