Le navire de ligne est le navire de guerre qui fut le fondement de la guerre navale entre les marines européennes, du début du XVIIe siècle au milieu du XXe siècle. Sa principale caractéristique était de combattre principalement avec son artillerie navale, à la différence des navires précédents qui utilisaient l'abordage, voire l'éperonnage. Son appellation «de ligne» vient de la tactique navale qui lui est associée, la ligne de bataille, une formation dans laquelle les navires d'une même flotte se suivaient en file indienne, ce qui leur permettait d'utiliser au mieux leurs canons situés sur leurs flancs et limitait le risque de tirs fratricides. 1, record 1, French, - navire%20de%20ligne
