Following a careful preparatory process involving consultations with African Governments, African experts and several UN agencies concerned with African development, UNEP, in co-operation with the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), organized the first African Ministerial Conference on the Environment in Cairo from 14 - 16 December 1985. Since the inception of AMCEN, UNEP continues to be the primary source of funding for the implementation of the decisions, as well as the programmes of the Conference.
