The genesis of Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) formerly Afro-Asian Rural Reconstruction Organization, goes back to 1950's when a Rural Reconstruction Conference of twelve East Asian countries took place at Tokyo in 1955 under the chairmanship of Dr Shiroshi Nasu of Japan.

AARDO, formed 1962, is an autonomous inter-governmental organization comprising twenty seven members from Africa and Asia. AARDO is devoted to developing understanding among members for better appreciation of each other's problems and explore collectively, opportunities for coordination of efforts for promoting welfare and eradicating thirst, hunger, illiteracy, disease and poverty amongst rural people.
