CATION-EXCHANGE RESIN [2 records]

Record 1 2016-02-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
  • Electrochemistry
  • Wastewater Treatment
DEF

A resin that holds and swaps only cations. Cation resins contain hydrogen ions (H+) to remove positively-charged, dissolved ionic contaminants such as calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium.

CONT

Other important applications of ion exchange are water softening and the demineralization of water. ... In the second [application], all ionic impurities contained in water are removed by exchange for hydrogen and hydroxyl ions during passage of the water successively through cation- and anion-exchange resins in the acid and base form.

  • Électrochimie
  • Traitement des eaux usées
DEF

Résine qui échange uniquement les cations.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biotechnology
DEF

An exchanger containing cations which are exchangeable for other cations present in the solution.

OBS

The term cation-exchanger resin may be used in the case of solid organic polymers.

OBS

The early cation exchangers were naturally occurring zeolites but these have been almost completely superseded by the synthetic organic ion exchangers. The synthetic cation exchangers are classified into two main groups, the weak cation exchangers and the strong cation exchanger. In the former the main functional groups are carboxylic acid groups and in the latter they are sulphonic acid groups.

DEF
