Les émulsions sont des mélanges d'eau, de bitume et d'agents émulsifiants et stabilisants. Il y en a deux types : les émulsions anioniques [...] et les émulsions cationiques, utilisées avec des granulats acides dont les charges négatives attirent les charges positives.

Le caractère lipophile du radical R assure une émulsion du type bitume dans l'eau [...] et procure ensuite, par absorption à la surface des micelles de bitume une couche protectrice à charge négative (émulsion basique) ou positive (émulsion acide).
