Période de grands bouleversements en Chine, de 1966 à 1970. Elle se caractérise par une remise en cause totale des institutions politiques, économiques, universitaires et militaires. La direction du pays cherchait à empêcher l'avènement d'une classe dominante sclérosée comme en Union soviétique. Elle procéda à un renouvellement des cadres et chercha à valoriser le travail manuel en les envoyant travailler dans les champs. Le résultat fut un monumental chaos dont la Chine eut beaucoup de mal à se remettre.
