Once the wind speed reaches the rated speed, further increases in wind speed do not increase the power output of the machine; the power output stays the same from the rated speed to the cut-out speed.

Contrairement à d'autres appareils de conversion d'énergie, les aérogénérateurs n'ont pas une puissance unique mais bien différentes puissances acquises selon chaque vitesse du vent : de la vitesse de démarrage à la vitesse nominale, la génératrice commence à fournir de l'électricité puis augmente graduellement de puissance jusqu'à sa puissance maximale (dite nominale). Cette puissance nominale reste stable jusqu'à la vitesse d'éclipsage où tout le système s'arrête.
