On utilise la détente d'un gaz à travers une tuyère de Laval, constituée d'un convergent et d'un divergent, afin de créer un écoulement de supersonique froid (jusqu'à 10 K) dont la vitesse, la densité et la température sont constantes sur quelques dizaines de centimètres, soit quelques centaines de microsecondes.
