OBS

Le terme «écotoxicologie» a été introduit par Truhaut en 1969 et était dérivé des mots «écologie» et «toxicologie». Jusque-là, les études de toxicologie environnementales concernaient principalement les effets néfastes des toxiques sur l'homme. L'écotoxicologie prend ainsi en compte les effets des produits chimiques dans le contexte de l'écologie.

OBS

Par conséquent, les critères de danger écotoxique devraient être basés sur les propriétés des substances contenues dans le déchet, comme la toxicité, la dégradabilité et la capacité de bioaccumulation, en accord avec la classification internationalement agréée (OCDE 2001).
