[A community initiative of the Commission of the European Communities] launched in 1990 ... under the ERDF [European Regional Development Fund, and whose objectives are to] help the least favoured regions tackle their environmental problems and thereby to help them put their economic and social development on a firmer footing. ENVIREG is restricted to coastal areas [and consists of] four measures: - reduction of pollution [particularly in the Mediterranean regions]; - land use planning ...; - control of industrial waste; - strengthening of know-how [relating to the design and management of facilities for reducing pollution].
