Le terme blépharostat est plus spécifique que spéculum. Le terme spéculum désigne en effet tout instrument permettant d'agrandir et de maintenir béantes certaines cavités (vagin, rectum, etc.) pour en faciliter l'examen et éventuellement y introduire un instrument. Il y a notamment des spéculums anaux, rectaux, vaginaux et oculaires.
