[The] fluorescent tube is filled with low pressure argon gas and mercury vapor, and the inner surface is coated with fluorescent material. At the ends are electrodes which act as filaments, too. During the operation, an electric discharge occurs between the electrodes, exciting mercury atoms. The excited atoms radiate ultraviolet light which in turn excites atoms of the fluorescent material, causing it to emit visible light.

Un tube fluorescent (appelé souvent tube néon) est monté sur une réglette en tôle laquée avec deux douilles, un transformateur et un starter. Les réglettes doivent être généralement assemblées avant leur installation.

OBS

Les tubes fluorescents sont principalement utilisés dans les cuisines en dessous de meubles, mais aussi dans les salles de bain (déconseillé pour l'apparence de votre teint!) et pour l'éclairage interne des placards. Autre possibilité : Ils sont employés dans la partie garage ou atelier. Ils dispensent une lumière dite "froide", qui est excellente pour obtenir une bonne visibilité.

Les tubes fluorescents s'apparentent aux cathodiques : ce sont des tubes à vide sans balayage, constitués d'une cathode recouverte d'oxydes, d'une grille et d'une anode recouverte d'un matériau phosphorescent conducteur. La faible distance entre anode et cathode permet le bombardement électronique sous faible tension : 25 à 50 volts pour les petits afficheurs courants. Ils présentent des temps de réponse rapides, une bonne tenue en température et de nombreuses couleurs d'émission.
