Cette sous-structure concentrique autour du foyer, Jacques-Emile Dubois l'appelle FREL (Fragment d'environnement limité). Chaque molécule sera définie comme un ensemble de FREL. Mais, pour l'instant, notre FREL reste flou. On ne connaît que les possibilités de construction : la description est purement topologique. Pour décrire précisément le composé, on va maintenant «colorer» le FREL. Par convention, les chimistes considèrent en effet que les atomes de carbone sont noirs que les autres éléments (oxygène, azote, chlore [...] sont colorés. (Sciences et Avenir, avril 1984, p. 88).
