Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP) is the most widely used laser frequency multiplication crystal. Les termes «tache sombre», «tache noire», «voile noir» sont utilisés pour désigner un phénomène appelé «grey track» ou «grey tracking». Cette expression est apparue pour qualifier l'aspect du cristal après dommage. Habituellement un dommage optique par laser apparaît en surface de façon prononcée. Le dommage appelé «grey track» ou «grey tracking» réfère à une coloration du cristal plus ou moins intense suivant les conditions laser. Cette coloration jaune, grise ou même noire se situe à l'intérieur du cristal le long de la trajectoire du faisceau laser.
