The homeobox is a semiconserved DNA sequence of 180 nucleotides found within the coding region of many eukaryotic genes, which constitute a multigene family of homeobox genes or homeogenes. The sequence encodes a protein motif of 60 amino acids - the homeodomain, which forms part of a homeodomain protein or homeoprotein.

Les différentes combinaisons d'homéoprotéines aboutiraient à l'expression des protéines spécifiques responsables des différenciations des cellules, en fonction de leurs positions. C'est à travers le contrôle de l'expression de gènes que les protéines homéotiques peuvent diriger la morphogenèse.

Il semble que tous les gènes aient une logique d'expression similaire : plusieurs homéoprotéines différentes sont présentes dans les mêmes structures.
