"L'évolution régressive est limitée, discontinue, irréversible". Ainsi, l'Évolution n'a jamais fait réapparaître et utiliser les doigts disparus chez les Équidés. Il existe bien des chevaux à doigts surnuméraires, mais il n'y a jamais de points d'ossification surnuméraires chez l'Embryon ("Grassé"). Ces doigts surnuméraires ne provenant pas d'une ébauche embryonnaire peuvent provenir non de la résurgence du doigt disparu, mais d'une division du bourgeon donnant le doigt normal ("Grassé").
