Les boucles sont interchangeables et leur volume peut varier entre 20 [mu]l et quelques millilitres. La commutation de la vanne ainsi que le remplissage de la boucle sont à commande pneumatique.

[En chromatographie liquide], l'échantillon est donc injecté à l'aide de vannes à boucle d'échantillonnage interne ou externe. Les vannes peuvent être utilisées soit manuellement, soit commandées par un passeur automatique d'échantillons, soit encore motorisées de façon à ne permettre l'injection que d'une faible partie du contenu de la boucle d'échantillonnage.
