In the Meteorological Products Extraction Facility (MPEF) meteorological products are operationally extracted from METEOSAT image data for use in forecasting and research work. The extraction is performed in an automatic processing scheme and includes an automatic quality control step as an integral part of the processing. The products are produced in near real time on a networked system of HP Apollo workstations running proprietary software. The system runs in "chains" where two workstations operate together to produce all products. Due to the CPU load required to produce the wind products, the processing is partitioned such that these products are generated on one of the chain processors, whilst the remaining products are derived on the other chain processor.
