Le méthanol est de loin l'alcool le moins cher, c'est la base des carburants de substitution d'origine charbonnière ou végétale. A partir du gaz de synthèse (provenant de gazéification à l'oxygène du charbon, de lignite comme de biomasse) H2 + CO les procédés classiques de synthèse du méthanol sont applicables.
