The smallest amount (activity or mass) of an analyte in a sample that can be detected. It is implied that there is a probability of not detecting a quantity of analyte that is present (Type II error) and a probability of erroneously deciding that a positive (non-zero) quantity of analyte is present when it is not (Type I error).
